South Lake Tahoe in the Winter

Weather

The winter months in South Lake Tahoe often resemble scenes from a winter movie. Being the first mountain range from the Pacific means that the weather can change rapidly and linger for extended periods. Don't be surprised if you encounter a winter storm during your visit; these storms can dump several feet of snow on the mountains at once. However, once the storm passes, sunny days may follow, creating the perfect opportunity to hit the slopes.

Things to do in South Lake Tahoe in the Winter

Cross-country skiing

With perhaps the greatest number of cross-country ski areas in the country, the Lake Tahoe region features more than 500 miles of groomed trails. Check in with the local club, Nevada Nordic, which promotes community-supported cross-country ski and multi-use venues. The club issues grooming updates for trails it maintains.

Snowmobiling

Hop on for an exhilarating high-speed spin along the snow-covered trails or courses around South Lake Tahoe. Many local tours are designed for families. Take in the panoramic views of the lake and Sierra Nevadas, or test out a local snowmobile track. One of Lake Tahoe’s most popular snowmobile destinations, Zephyr Cove’s Tours allow breathtaking views of the lake from 9,000 feet above sea level along more than 45 miles of trails.

Sledding and Tubing

There’s no shortage of options around Lake Tahoe for families in search of the perfect sliding spot. Blizzard Mountain offers two tow lines and a large play area to amplify your snow day, and for the ultimate day in the snow, Adventure Mountain boasts the largest area of tubing terrain, with 40 acres of snowy family adventure — at 7,400 feet.

Snowshoeing

Lake Tahoe prides itself on this unique way to take in the views, get in a good workout and have fun. Check online for a plethora of trail maps, detailed descriptions and current reviews of favorite snowshoeing sites appropriate for your interests and abilities. Top destinations for advanced snowshoeing include Mount Tallac Trail and Granite Lake and Maggie’s Peaks in the Desolation Wilderness. Moderate to easy tours include Fallen Leaf Trail and Tamarack Lake.

Ice skating

Tie on some skates and try your hand (or foot) at this fun, family-friendly activity. Beginners can enjoy learning the basics in an entry-level class on South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena’s public venue’s well-groomed surface. Or check out some spectacular outdoor venues, such as Heavenly’s picturesque rink in South Tahoe.

World-Class Ski Resorts

Three resorts define the South Lake Tahoe ski scene. Heavenly Mountain Resort dominates the landscape and caters to skiers of all ages and abilities. Here, a gondola provides transport up the mountain year-round, and staggering views of the lake are worth the leisurely trip up. If you're planning on driving to Heavenly Mountain over the weekend, be sure to reserve your parking spot to be sure you have a place to park!

Kirkwood invites skiers of more advanced levels to try their skills, although cross-country excursions and other activities, like snowshoeing, are available, as well. Rounding out the ski scene is much-loved Sierra-at-Tahoe — a true locals favorite! The entire Tahoe region offers 15 ski resorts comprising 827 kilometers of slopes served by 46 ski lifts!

Aprés-Ski

There’s nothing like stretching your legs before a crackling fire pit and relaxing with a warming drink after a bracing day on the slopes. Just steps away from the descent on the Heavenly Ski Resort Gondola, a dizzying selection of restaurants and bars awaits.

This world-class destination offers world-class cuisine catering to an eclectic range of experiences. It’s all here, whether you’re looking for a family-friendly meal with a view of the lake, a white-tablecloth experience or a late-night cocktail or two. Here, you’ll find a variety of international menus, as well as local beer and classic cocktails — a mainstay of the South Shore’s legendary nightlife scene.
